What to do when you are falling?

Sidewalk falls are a scary but constant danger of living in New York City. Some of the hazardous conditions that can lead to falls are slippery walkways, broken sidewalks, broken surfaces on a parking lot, potholes, and icy and snowy walkways. In a perfect world property owners would keep their properties free of such hazards, but the reality is this doesn’t always happen. Too often, a property owner’s disregard for their property or general negligence leads to people suffering falls.

Contrary to popular belief, when someone falls there are things you can do to reduce the harm and injuries of the falls! When it comes to falling, there is a “right” and a “wrong” way to do it. A  New York Times article went over some tips on falling from paratroopers, physical therapists, martial arts instructors and stunt professionals. Here are some helpful do’s and don’ts of falling that the article points to:

  • Do roll with the fall.
  • Do take steps to try to break up the impact.
  • Do turn to your side.
  • Do tuck in and protect your head.
  • Do try to have the fleshy parts of your body take the brunt of the impact.
  • Don’t stiffen up.
  • Don’t fall straight forward or backward.
  • Don’t reach your hands out.
  • Don’t use your knees to try to catch yourself.

If you or someone you know falls on someone else’s property, you may be entitled to pursue legal action. A multitude of factors to influence the extent of which a property owner is at fault in a slip/trip and fall scenario.
