Yellow taxi cabs are a dime a dozen in New York City. You can find them flying down the street at all times of day in droves. However, this is anot always a good thing. Taxis have been notorious for speeding, not following pedestrian right of way laws, and other offensives.
This past weekend in New York City, a 73-year-old cab driver working the end of a 16-hour shift hit and killed an 88-year-old great-grandmother on the Upper West Side on Sunday, law enforcement sources said. He was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian. The victim was walking in the crosswalk and had the light when she was struck, so everything she was doing was right.
The cab driver told police he had been on the road since 9 a.m., which added up to about 16 hours. By law, cab drivers aren’t supposed to work more than 12 hours per day. The driver has been a cab since at least 1989, when The Taxi and Limousine Commission began keeping computerized records, but the T&LC suspended his license in wake of this accident.
The woman involved in this accident was the third pedestrian to die and at least the seventh hit since Friday evening, a 3-day period. The bloody weekend started Friday evening when a car hit and killed an 86-year-old woman on the Upper West Side, followed by another death on Saturday night, when a 68-year-old man was hit and killed in Queens as he crossed the street against the traffic signal. On Sunday, a 19-year-old passenger was killed when the car she was traveling in hit a guardrail on a Brooklyn parkway.
