New York State Seatbelt Regulations

From May 22, 2017, and June 4, 2017, New York State law enforcement will be participating in a zero tolerance movement to promote and enforce the use of seatbelts for drivers and passengers of motor vehicles. Many New Yorkers use Memorial Day weekend to travel throughout the state to celebrate the beginning of summer at our beautiful lakes, state parks, and beaches. However, a lot of people aren’t actually aware of the specifics of seat belt laws that they are required to follow.

All drivers and passengers are required to wear seatbelts. If a driver or a passenger in the front seat of the car age 16 or older, fails to wear a seatbelt, they can receive a $50 fine. All passengers under the age of 16 are required to wear a seatbelt. If the driver fails to make sure the passengers under age 16 is wearing a seatbelt, they can have 3 points added to their license and receive a fine between $25 and $100.

Seatbelts can prevent you from being seriously injured or killed in the wake of a motor vehicle accident. If you have been injured in a car accident in New York State, you may be able to bring a lawsuit for your injuries. An injured person may be able to collect damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and loss of enjoyment of life.
