How to Help Your Loved One Cope with a Brain Injury

Watching a loved one struggle with the sudden limitations imposed by a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is heartbreaking. It’s natural for both the victim and his or her family members to feel powerless. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help your relative cope with the tragic effects of TBI. Those steps include:

  1. Simplify His or Her Living Space

Memory loss is a common side effect of TBI. As such, patients might find it challenging to complete even the most basic tasks such as doing laundry or cooking a meal.

You can help your loved one regain his or her confidence around the house by keeping things organized. After de-cluttering, take a few minutes to label all the drawers, cabinets, baskets, and tubs. Even if you place each item in a fairly intuitive place—toothpaste in the medicine cabinet, for example, or socks and underwear in the top drawer—your relative may be unable to locate the essentials while recovering, so labeling the locations of these items can be immensely helpful.

  1. Go on Relaxing Outings Together

Individuals who are recovering from any kind of injury should make it a point to get outside at least once a day. This is especially true for those with traumatic brain injury because they’re vulnerable to loneliness and depression, which can derail any progress they’ve made.

Just make sure to choose the outings carefully. Depending on the severity of the injury, sensory overload could be a very real concern. Opt for quiet, restful excursions such as botanical gardens, lazy coffee shops, and bookstores.

  1. Help with Domestic Duties

The side effects of a traumatic brain injury can make it challenging to stay on top of household chores. Taking on various domestic duties will allow your loved one to focus on recovering and ensure he or she is comfortable.

Since not everyone is inclined to ask for help—even after getting hurt in a serious accident—take the initiative and just do whatever household chores you can. Examples include:

  • Stocking the fridge and cabinets with fresh groceries;
  • Preparing hot meals;
  • Mowing the lawn;
  • Washing and folding the laundry;
  • Doing the dishes;
  • Feeding any pets; and
  • Vacuuming, mopping, and dusting.
