Motorcycle Accidents in New York

Many types of vehicles inhabit the road on a daily bases. Generally, motorcycles are the smallest of them. Because of their size, motorcycles are highly susceptible to accidents.  In fact, motorcycles make up 14% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents, according to the New York City Department of Transportation. In addition to their size, motorcycles lack the same protection as other vehicles on the road. Motorcycles accidents can also cause very serious injuries to the riders. This can include spinal cord and brain injuries. According to statistics, a motorcyclist’s chance of dying in an accident is 18 times greater than those in a different automobile. It is the unfortunate reality that motorcycle accidents end poorly more often than other accidents on the road.

Causes of Accidents

Sometimes, accidents happen simply because mistakes are made while many people are on the road. While this is true, one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents, in general, is negligent driving. Many motorcycle accidents can be avoided if motorists stay aware of their surroundings and follow the rules of the road. If a motorcyclist fails to do so, they have the power to cause very serious harm to themselves as well as other drivers on the road. However, their threat of injury is much greater than others. This is due to the size of the bike as well as its lack of protection.

Motorcycle accidents can happen for various reasons. This can include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Dangerous driving
  • Drunk driving
  • Defective motorcycle parts
  • Poor weather

If a driver is negligent while on the road and causes an accident, they can be held liable for any harm they may cause to others as a result.

Receiving Compensation

When an individual becomes injured as a result of negligent actions, they sometimes wish to hold the negligent party responsible for their actions. To do so, they are required to provide evidence that shows the other party acted negligently. In the event of a successful case, the injured party may be entitled to receive compensation. This may be economic or noneconomic compensation. Compensation may be pursued for the following:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of enjoyment of life
  • Medical care
  • Rehabilitation costs
  • Loss of current and future wages
  • Funeral expenses in the event of wrongful deaths
